By 2050, the world population will reach almost 10 billion people, and their appetite for quality, nutritious food will increase significantly. The amount of arable land for production of food will not increase (estimated to rather decline by about 10%), climate change and urbanisation will also add pressure on available resources. More than ever before, the use of technology and best practices to improve yields and the sustainability of food production will be important. This is even more so for sub-saharan Africa and Nigeria in particular with an increasing population, challenges with food security and safety and an emerging middle class. There are also challenges of insecurity, optimal infrastructure, absence of leading research and frictions in the agro value chain.
